Belinda Bencic spoke about returning to tour after the birth of her daughter. - You played a professional tournament six months after the birth of your daughter Bella. Isn`t it too early?
- Of course, I returned much faster than I expected. Initially, I didn`t limit myself in time because I didn`t want to put pressure on myself and didn`t know what to expect. Everything depended on how the birth would go and how I would feel. Everyone asked when I would be back, but I couldn`t give a concrete answer.
- When did you return to training?
- About eight weeks after giving birth, I began to move a little and do the permitted exercises. At first the process went very slowly, and then suddenly accelerated. It was as if muscle memory had kicked in. I can`t say that I`m in the best shape yet, but I`m surprised that I returned to tournaments so quickly.
- What are your plans for next year?
- I will play in those tournaments that I can get to. We`re in the United Cup and I`m using a protected ranking for the Australian Open. Of course, you will need to think about which tournaments predictions by soccer partners it makes sense to enter using a protected rating, and which ones it doesn`t. I will evaluate my level and current rating. But of course I want to play a lot of tournaments.
- Are you sure you want to play in all the Grand Slams? Any chance of a wild card?
- I don`t know yet. I want to play two, but I have yet to decide. Most likely it will be the Australian Open and Wimbledon. It`s not clear whether I`ll get to Roland Garros or whether I`ll have to play through qualification. The question is still open.
- Are you still setting goals or are you playing freely because you have already achieved a lot on tour?
- My goal is still to win a Grand Slam. I don`t know when and I don`t set any time frame for myself, but it would be great to achieve this.
On the other hand, I`m already very happy with my career. Even if it ends now, I can say that I am very satisfied. Winning the Olympics is the best thing that happened to me in sports.
It`s hard to set a goal for next season because I don`t know what I`m capable of yet. But I want to rise in the rankings.
- Do you think taking a career break was the right decision? You could have waited. When you gave birth to your daughter, you were young, 26 years old.
- I think it was the right decision. We consciously accepted it. I think it`s better to end my career now and have the opportunity to continue playing than to feel the pressure of having to end it at, say, 33. My biggest dream is to have a family. I thought it would be better this way. Now I can play as much as I want and then have more children.
