The Swiss Federal Prosecutor`s Office suspects the former president of the World Football Federation (FIFA) Sepp Blatter and the former head of UEFA Michel Platini in fraud in a corruption case in FIFA, the Associated Press reported. According to the materials of the earlier case, the former leaders of world football are suspected of mismanagement and misappropriation of funds, as well as forgery. The investigation has now been expanded to include suspected fraud.
In November, the federal prosecutor`s office informed the parties that it was reopening the proceedings on the basis of current investigation data. Blatter and Platini have since been suspected of fraud, prosecutors said in a statement.
In the Swiss Penal Code, fraud for personal gain is punishable by a fine or imprisonment of up to five years. In the autumn of 2015, the Swiss Federal Bureau of Justice filed a lawsuit against then-FIFA President Blatter on suspicion of illegally transferring in 2011 2 million Swiss francs to Platini, then head of UEFA. Platini presented invoices for non-contractual salaries for his work as Blatter`s adviser during his first presidential term (1998-2002). Platini and Blatter deny their guilt.
The Arbitration Chamber of the FIFA Ethics Committee on December 21, 2015 removed Blatter and Platini from football for eight years. On February 24, 2016, FIFA reduced the term of the sanction to six years. Blatter and Platini appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), which reduced Platini`s sentence to four years and dismissed Blatter`s appeal. The Frenchman subsequently challenged the decision in a Swiss federal court, but his appeal was rejected.
