David De Gea did not retire from Spain.

The 32-year-old Spaniard was not called up to the national team for the 2022 World Cup. El Chiringuito journalist Jose Alvarez spoke about the details of this.

Alvarez said that coach Luis Enrique personally called De Gea to inform him that he would not be part of the national team. Enrique called it a technical solution.

This was followed by one call from the President of the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), Luis Rubiales, who congratulated the goalkeeper on his decision to retire from the national team. De Gea clarified that he has no plans to announce his resignation and is ready to go to the national team if he receives a call.

A few days later [after the conversation with Enrique], David received a message from Rubiales, who said: David, I`m glad that you finally made a decision that you had been thinking about for a long time. I have already been informed that you are leaving the national team.

To this, De Gea replied: There is no solution, who told you that I was giving up something? The coach told me that he did not count on me, but I have never refused the national team and I am not going to do this if I am called up, - this is how Alvarez conveyed the essence of the dialogue.

Recall that De Gea has not played for Spain since October 2020. Nevertheless, he was regularly called up to the national team and was in the squad for Euro 2020.
